Rajasthan Covering an area of 342,239 square kilometers, romantic fort and palaces, marvelous monuments, painted havelies thriving cities, beautiful towns, colorful crafts, fair and festivals, rich folklore and friendly people, picturesque lakes, wild life sanctuaries and Golden sand dunes. This is the “Rajasthan” Rajasthan, the land of kings embodies the entire fairy-tale nation that its name evokes. This is the home of the Rajputs, the ruling warrior clans who controlled this part of India fo over 1000 year. The three Rajput clans claim descent from the sun, the moon and the f lames of a sacrificial fire, and their highly evolved code of chivalry and honour is akin to that of medieval European knights.

Fiercely independent and renowned for their velour and pride, they preferred to die an honorable death than to suffer the ignominy of capture. When defeat was inevitable, this translated into occasions of grim mass suicide known as Jawhar, in which hundreds of women hurled themselves onto funeral pyres, while their men rode out to face certain death at the hands of the enemy. The Rajputs entrenched themselves in this harsh desert land in enormous forts such as Chittorgarh, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer. Many of their sumptuous palaces are now open to visitors, offering a glimpse into the decadence of the princes´ lives in their last glory days of the 19th and early 20th centuries Rajasthan is also among the richest states in the country as far as the field of arts and crafts is concerned. Stone, clay leather, wood, ivory, lac and glass, sandalwood and wood, and wood, stone carving, hand printing fabrics mirror work, costumes etc. Without music and dance, people of Rajasthan cannot survive. After hard work in the harsh desert Sun and rocky terrain, there is dancing, singing, drama, devotional music and puppet shows and other community festivities. So, All of which add to attraction of this wonder land we call Rajasthan.
Ghoomar Dance
The Ghoomar is the most popular form of Rajasthani dance. Women perform this dance during auspicious events and occasions. The name Ghoomar is derived from the word "Ghoomna", which means twirling. The colorful skirts known as "Ghagra" look stunningly when they gracefully sway while the women dance.
Gair Dance
This dance is basically a tribal dance and is performed by both men and women. Gair dance is performed during Holi festival and is a very lively dance. The dress is basically a long tunic that opens out as a skirt. The dance beats are given by sticks to maintain the rhythm.
Bhavai Dance
The Bhavai dance is a very difficult dance and only highly skilled dancers perform this dance. It is a very impressive and stunning dance and one of the most popular dances of Rajasthan. The dance basically involves women dancers who balance eight to nine brass pitchers on their heads and dance softly and twirl slowly. All this, while balancing themselves firmly on the edge of a sword or on a glass!
Chari Dance
The Chari dance is basically a village dance, which is performed to express happiness when the villagers go in search of water and find it. The dancers choreograph the dance and many subtle patterns are formed by hands. The dancers are supposed to balance brass pots on their heads while performing this dance gracefully. Cottonseeds set aflame are placed on the topmost pot so that the movement of the heads causes the flames to form brilliant patterns.
