Churches of Goa
Goa once ruled by the Portuguese are famous for its churches which have become an integral part of this small state in India. These churches are the attraction of tourism in Goa as they house important documents or ruins related to the history of the state. The famous churches of Goa are Basilica of Bom Jesus, S E Cathedral, Convent and Church of St. Francis of Assisi, Church & Convent of St. Monica, The Church of Mae de Deus. The Basilica of Bom Jesus is undoubtedly the most famous among the churches of Goa because it contains the mortal remains of Saint Francis Xavier. It is believed that even after four centuries the sacred body of this saint is devoid of decay. This church was built in the year 1605 and has been declared as the world heritage site. The S E Cathedral built in Tuscan style is dedicated to the memory of Saint Catherine and is famous for the cross of Miracles which is believed to be growing in size. The martyrdom of the saint is depicted in the central altars that are heavily gilded.
